Iran’s representative to India said the Strait of Hormuz will reopen soon following a shooting incident involving vessels in the waterway [1].
The statement comes as India and Iran navigate diplomatic tensions after the maritime attack, which threatened critical shipping lanes and regional stability.
Abdul Majid Hakeem Ilahi, the representative of Iran’s Supreme Leader in India, said in Hyderabad on April 19, 2026 [2]. He said that the waterway had been closed due to security issues stemming from an imposed war against Iran [3]. According to reports, two Indian-flagged vessels were involved in the shooting incident [4].
Ilahi said that Iran’s current situation is good and that a victory is imminent [5]. He also addressed the relationship between Tehran and New Delhi, saying that India and Iran have strong ties and stand together during these challenging times [6].
The envoy criticized the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump, specifically targeting recent remarks made by the president [5]. Ilahi said the U.S. is not serious about negotiations and is attempting to control global oil prices [7].
Regarding the maritime crisis, Ilahi said, "The Strait of Hormuz was open and due to the imposed war against Iran, it was closed because of the security issues and we hope that it will be opened very soon" [3].
“"The Strait of Hormuz was open... we hope that it will be opened very soon."”
The incident involving Indian-flagged ships in the Strait of Hormuz highlights the vulnerability of global energy corridors to geopolitical friction. By emphasizing strong ties with New Delhi while criticizing U.S. oil price interference, Iran is attempting to maintain strategic partnerships in Asia to offset American diplomatic and economic pressure.
