Iran has discovered a major natural gas field in its southern Fars province, according to government officials.

The discovery provides a strategic energy asset for Tehran as it faces ongoing U.S. economic sanctions and international pressure that restrict its ability to export oil.

Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad said that the total discovered natural gas volume exceeds 7.5 trillion cubic feet [1]. This volume is approximately 212 billion cubic metres [4]. Of that total, officials estimate that about 5.7 trillion cubic feet of the gas is recoverable [2].

The find is located in the southern region of Fars province [3]. The Iranian government intends to use these reserves to bolster its energy portfolio and ensure domestic stability amid external economic constraints.

While the announcement emphasizes the scale of the reserves, the actual extraction and monetization of the gas will depend on Iran's access to international technology and investment, areas often limited by current sanctions regimes [5].

Paknejad said the discovery is a significant addition to the country's hydrocarbon assets. The government has not yet released a specific timeline for when the field will begin commercial production.

This discovery allows Iran to diversify its energy dependencies and strengthen its domestic power and heating infrastructure. By increasing its natural gas capacity, Tehran can potentially reduce its reliance on oil exports for revenue, providing a critical economic buffer against U.S. sanctions that target the petroleum sector.
