The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps said a U.S. cruise missile struck a bridge in the city of Aq Qala, Golestan province.
The incident marks a direct escalation in tensions between the two nations, with Iran now threatening a military counter-strike in response to the attack.
According to the IRGC, the strike targeted infrastructure in northern Iran. The organization identified the United States as the party responsible for the cruise missile launch, describing the action as hostile aggression.
An IRGC spokesperson said there were zero human casualties [1] resulting from the impact on the bridge. Despite the lack of loss of life, the Iranian military emphasized the severity of the breach of sovereignty.
"We will respond overwhelmingly to the targeting of a bridge in the city of Aq Qala in the north of the country," the IRGC spokesperson said.
The IRGC has not yet specified the timing or nature of the promised response. The strike occurred in Golestan province, a region in the northern part of the country.
U.S. officials have not issued a formal statement regarding the operation in Aq Qala. The IRGC continues to monitor the site for further damage while maintaining a state of alert across its military installations.
“We will respond overwhelmingly to the targeting of a bridge in the city of Aq Qala”
This development suggests a shift toward more direct kinetic confrontations between the U.S. and Iran. By targeting infrastructure in Golestan province, the strike moves the point of conflict to northern Iran, potentially expanding the geographic scope of the tension. The IRGC's vow of an 'overwhelming' response indicates that Tehran is prioritizing a show of strength to deter further strikes, which increases the risk of a wider regional escalation.
