Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it shot down a U.S. MQ-9 Reaper drone near the southern coast of Iran on Saturday [1, 3].

The incident occurs amid heightened tensions over the U.S. naval presence in the region and recent military strikes. The clash risks further escalation between Washington and Tehran in one of the world's most critical maritime corridors.

An IRGC spokesperson said, "We have successfully downed the American MQ-9 drone over our airspace" [2]. Iranian officials said the drone violated their airspace [5]. The aircraft was reportedly brought down over the Strait of Hormuz [1, 3].

In response, the U.S. carried out air strikes against Iranian military infrastructure. A U.S. Central Command spokesperson said, "Our forces struck Iranian air-defence, ground-control stations, and surveillance radar sites near the Strait of Hormuz with precision munitions" [4].

Conflicting accounts of the engagement have emerged. While the IRGC and some reports identify the downed aircraft as an MQ-9 Reaper [1, 3], other reports suggest U.S. forces shot down drones launched by Iran. Additionally, some accounts describe the downed aircraft as a U.S. Apache helicopter [4].

Joy Malbon of CTV News said, "Two conflicting narratives are emerging over a military strike that saw Iran shoot down a U.S. drone" [2].

The U.S. strikes specifically targeted ground-control stations, and surveillance radar sites to degrade Iranian air-defense capabilities [4]. This sequence of events marks a significant spike in direct military friction between the two nations this week.

"We have successfully downed the American MQ-9 drone over our airspace."

The clash over the Strait of Hormuz highlights the volatility of the region and the risk of miscalculation. By targeting radar and air-defense sites, the U.S. is signaling a willingness to degrade Iranian capabilities in response to the loss of surveillance assets. The discrepancy in reports regarding the type of aircraft downed—ranging from a Reaper drone to an Apache helicopter—suggests a fog of war or a deliberate effort by both sides to control the narrative of the escalation.
