The Israel Defense Forces carried out air raids on southern Lebanon on May 1, 2024, targeting sites linked to Hezbollah.
These strikes represent a significant escalation in the conflict between Israel and the Lebanese militant group, as both sides attempt to establish deterrence through military force.
Israeli aircraft hit at least six villages [4] in southern Lebanon, including Bsalya, Jbaa, Reyhan, Jbour, Bargaz, and the Wadi Blat area. The Israeli army said the raids were designed to destroy military infrastructure used by Hezbollah following continued attacks from the group.
Casualties from the strikes were significant. An Anadolu Agency correspondent said the death toll from the raids rose to 20 [3], with dozens of other people injured.
There are conflicting reports regarding the scale of the operation. The Lebanese Ministry of Information said that Israel hit 120 Hezbollah sites [1] in the south. However, other reports indicate that approximately 30 locations [2] were hit during the latest wave of attacks.
An Israeli army spokesperson said, "We have destroyed dozens of Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon."
Israel said the objective of the mission was to deter further escalation and neutralize the group's capacity to launch further strikes. The raids targeted a mix of infrastructure and military assets across the southern border region.
“The death toll from the Israeli raids has risen to 20, with dozens injured.”
The discrepancy in reported target numbers—ranging from 30 to 120 sites—highlights the difficulty of verifying military outcomes in active conflict zones. By targeting multiple villages simultaneously, Israel is attempting to degrade Hezbollah's operational depth in southern Lebanon to prevent further cross-border incursions.
