Senator Iván Cepeda of the Pacto Histórico coalition won the internal primary to become the sole left-wing presidential candidate in Colombia.
This victory consolidates the progressive wing of Colombian politics, positioning Cepeda as the primary challenger to maintain the ideological trajectory of the current administration.
Cepeda cast his vote at 11:25 a.m. [2] on Oct. 26, 2023 [1], at the San Lucas school in the Kennedy locality of south Bogotá [2]. He was greeted by hundreds of supporters [4] and dozens of journalists [5] during the event.
Following the results, Cepeda focused on the continuity of progressive leadership. "Today we will celebrate the second progressive government in Colombia," Cepeda said [1].
He emphasized that the victory serves as a foundation for a unified front. "The Colombian left can build a second government," Cepeda said [1].
By winning the internal consultation of the Pacto Histórico, Cepeda has effectively cleared the path to represent the coalition in the general election. "With this victory, we are on our way to being the sole pre-candidate of the left," Cepeda said [3].
The event in Bogotá marked a pivotal moment for the coalition, which seeks to transition from the current leadership to a sustained period of left-wing governance, a goal Cepeda believes is now attainable through this unified candidacy.
“Today we will celebrate the second progressive government in Colombia”
Cepeda's victory prevents a fractured left-wing vote by establishing a single candidate for the Pacto Histórico. This unification is a strategic attempt to ensure that the progressive movement maintains executive power in Colombia, moving beyond a single term to create a lasting ideological shift in the country's governance.
