External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin on Monday to strengthen the India-Russia strategic partnership.
The meeting signals India's intent to maintain deep diplomatic and economic ties with Moscow despite global geopolitical pressures. By coordinating attendance at major multilateral forums, both nations aim to solidify their influence in the Global South.
During the talks, Jaishankar delivered a message from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The message included an invitation for Putin to attend the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit and a welcome for him to visit India for the BRICS summit.
"Modi looks forward to meeting Putin at the SCO summit and welcoming him to India for the BRICS summit," Jaishankar said.
The leaders focused on expanding bilateral cooperation across several critical sectors. Jaishankar said, "We will expand cooperation in trade, energy, and nuclear sectors."
President Putin attributed the recent economic growth between the two nations to the leadership of the Indian Prime Minister. He noted that he credits Narendra Modi's personal attention for the growth in India-Russia trade this year, Putin said.
The discussions took place in Moscow, where the two officials reviewed global developments and the current state of their strategic alliance. The meeting underscores a continued reliance on Russian energy and nuclear technology to fuel India's industrial growth.
