Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw flagged off the first direct Vande Bharat Express between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar on April 30, 2024 [5].

The new service establishes a critical all-weather rail link between the twin capitals of Jammu and Kashmir. By reducing travel time and increasing reliability, the route aims to boost regional tourism and strengthen socio-economic connectivity across the Union Territory.

The train consists of 20 coaches [1] and covers a total distance of 267 km [2]. According to official data, the service will reduce the travel time between the two cities to less than five hours [3]. This represents a significant improvement in transit efficiency for passengers moving through the mountainous terrain.

While the formal flag-off ceremony took place on Thursday, regular passenger services are scheduled to begin on May 2, 2024 [4]. The project is part of a broader effort to integrate the region's infrastructure and provide stable transportation that is not subject to the seasonal closures often affecting road travel.

Vaishnaw said the project is intended to provide a seamless connection between the two regions. The deployment of the Vande Bharat fleet, India's premier semi-high-speed train service, signals a shift toward modernized transit in the northern territory.

The service will reduce the travel time between the two cities to less than five hours.

The introduction of a high-speed, all-weather rail link reduces the dependence on highway transit, which is frequently disrupted by landslides and snow in the region. By cutting travel time to under five hours, the government is attempting to integrate the economic hubs of Jammu and Srinagar more tightly, potentially increasing the flow of commerce and tourists into the Kashmir Valley.
