Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw flagged off the first direct Jammu Tawi-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express on April 30, 2024 [1, 2].
The launch marks the completion of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, a critical infrastructure effort intended to integrate the region with the rest of India. By connecting these hubs, the government aims to stimulate trade, increase daily commuting efficiency, and grow the local tourism industry [1, 2].
The new service utilizes a 20-coach train [1]. This high-speed rail project includes the crossing of the Chenab Bridge, an engineering milestone in Jammu and Kashmir [1, 2]. Commercial services for the route are scheduled to begin on May 2, 2024 [1].
Travel time between Jammu and Srinagar is expected to decrease significantly. Previous services took approximately 12 hours, but the new route is expected to take about seven hours, saving passengers roughly four to five hours [2].
"This is a historic moment for the people of Jammu and Kashmir," Vaishnaw said. "The Vande Bharat Express will dramatically reduce travel time and open new avenues for tourism and trade" [1].
The Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir also noted the significance of the project. The inauguration of this high-speed train marks the completion of the USBRL and will bring the state closer to the rest of the country, the Chief Minister said [2].
The project represents a major shift in regional connectivity, linking previously isolated areas through modern rail technology [1, 2].
“"The Vande Bharat Express will dramatically reduce travel time and open new avenues for tourism and trade,"”
The completion of the USBRL project and the introduction of the Vande Bharat Express signify a strategic effort to strengthen the economic and physical integration of Jammu and Kashmir with mainland India. By reducing travel time by nearly 40 percent, the government is attempting to lower the cost of trade and make the region more accessible to tourists, which may lead to increased economic activity in the valley.
