Japanese companies are launching AI-based services and timelapse tools to help elementary school students complete their summer "free-research" homework projects.
These tools target a specific cultural pain point in the Japanese education system. The "free-research" assignment is widely regarded as the most difficult part of summer break, creating a market for education-tech companies to provide structured support.
According to a Benesse survey of 10,699 children [9], 30.3% of elementary students identified free-research and crafts as the most difficult homework [1]. Parents feel a similar burden, with 40.1% of parents citing these projects as the hardest tasks [1].
To address this, SKY PerfecTV! (Skypa JSAT) launched a service called "くもろぐラボ" on Aug. 14 [4]. For 500 yen [3], the service allows students to create a cloud-observation diary that is usable until the end of September [3]. Students must photograph the sky for 10 days [5], after which the AI automatically identifies the cloud types and generates a report.
Acceptance of these tools varies by the type of assignment. A SHIFT AI survey of 722 parents [8] found that while only 40% of parents accept the use of AI for general homework [6], that number jumps to 70% when the AI is used specifically for free-research projects [7].
Beyond automation, some companies are now turning student ideas into commercial products. This shift suggests a move toward integrating AI not just as a shortcut for completion, but as a tool for early-stage product development, and scientific observation.
