Japanese authorities are warning the public about a fraud technique called "card-face filming" where thieves record credit cards to steal account numbers.

This method is particularly dangerous because it allows criminals to obtain the necessary information for unauthorized transactions without ever physically possessing the card. As digital payment security evolves, this low-tech filming approach bypasses many traditional security assumptions.

Yosuke Seta, CEO of YS Consulting, said that recording both the front and back of a card is a significant risk. He said that a person can capture both sides of a card in approximately three seconds [3].

The scale of credit card fraud in Japan remains a critical issue. Last year, the total amount of damage from unauthorized credit card use reached approximately 51 billion yen [1]. Experts said that the vast majority of these cases involve the theft of the card number alone, rather than the theft of the physical card itself.

According to data provided by Seta, more than 90% of unauthorized use cases involve this type of number theft [2]. Because many online transactions only require the card number and security code, a brief video recording is sufficient for a thief to execute fraudulent purchases.

"It is a conceivable risk that a card may be unintentionally filmed," Seta said. He said that the speed of modern smartphone cameras makes this a viable threat in public spaces or during brief moments of card exposure [3].

Security experts recommend that users keep their cards covered when making payments and avoid leaving them on counters or tables where they can be easily filmed by bystanders.
