Japan's Economy Minister Ryōshō Akasawa announced Thursday the active introduction of autonomous "physical AI" robots to assist in decommissioning the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant [1].
This initiative represents a strategic shift to merge disaster recovery with technological advancement. By deploying advanced robotics in one of the world's most challenging environments, the Japanese government intends to accelerate the cleanup process while establishing a blueprint for national industrial automation.
During meetings held July 23 [1] at the Fukushima decommissioning site and Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) Holdings headquarters, Akasawa met with TEPCO's new chairman, Keisuke Yokoo [1]. The minister said he wants to use the site as a catalyst for broader technological change.
"I have a strong feeling that I want to make Fukushima the place where our country's AI transformation begins, through the introduction of physical AI to the decommissioning site," Akasawa said [1].
The use of physical AI refers to the integration of artificial intelligence with robotic hardware capable of interacting with the physical world. This is critical for the Fukushima site, where high radiation levels and unstable debris make human entry dangerous and traditional remote-controlled robots inefficient.
Chairman Yokoo, who is 74 years old [2], said he is willing to expand the scope of technology providers for these efforts. Regarding the procurement of these advanced systems, Yokoo said the company would not exclude foreign capital [3].
This openness to international partnerships suggests that Japan may look toward global AI and robotics firms to fill technical gaps in the decommissioning process.
