The Japanese government will reuse low-concentration radioactive decontamination soil at government offices in Saitama and Sendai [1].

Environment Minister Shinjiro Ishihara said the government is proceeding with the reuse of the soil at the regional offices in Saitama and Sendai [1]. The materials are currently stored at interim storage facilities located in the towns of Okuma and Futaba within Fukushima Prefecture [1].
Ishihara said low-concentration decontamination soil is being made available for use in public works projects and at the Prime Minister's Official Residence [3]. This follows previous efforts in 2023, when such soil was first utilized at the Prime Minister's Official Residence [1].
Under Japanese law, all decontamination soil must be permanently disposed of outside of Fukushima Prefecture by 2045 [1]. The government aims to utilize these low-concentration materials to reduce overall waste and stimulate regional activity before that deadline arrives.
The scale of the challenge is significant, as the total volume of decontamination soil is estimated to be equivalent to approximately 11 Tokyo Domes [2]. By expanding the reuse of soil with low radioactive concentrations, the government hopes to create a sustainable path toward the 2045 mandate.
Ishihara said the current focus is on ensuring the materials are handled safely within these government-managed facilities [1].
