Extreme heat in Japan has caused summer vegetables to grow abnormally large or suffer from sunburn, leading to higher consumer prices.

This agricultural disruption threatens food stability and farmer livelihoods as crops become unfit for market shipment. The phenomenon is creating a supply shock that directly impacts the cost of staple produce across the country.

In Tokyo, temperatures reached 35.2°C [1], while Kurume City in Fukuoka Prefecture recorded a high of 35.5°C [2]. These conditions were exacerbated by three consecutive days of extreme heat [1]. The prolonged high temperatures caused cucumbers, tomatoes, and eggplants to grow rapidly and lose moisture, resulting in oversized fruit, cracking, and sunburn.

Takeo Kubota, a farmer at Tokyo Earth Farm in Akiruno, Tokyo, described the rapid deterioration of his crops. "This is a cucumber field, but the cucumbers are turning into monsters," Kubota said. "After one or two days, they become this huge."

Because these oversized or damaged vegetables cannot be shipped to stores, the available supply has plummeted. This shortage has driven up prices, with some reports indicating cucumber prices have increased by 1.5 times [3], while others state they have nearly doubled [2].

Beyond current harvests, farmers are concerned about the upcoming planting cycle. High temperatures can inhibit the germination of seeds for winter vegetables.

"What I am most worried about is that when we sow winter vegetable seeds in September, they will not germinate if the temperature exceeds 30°C," Kubota said. "Sowing seeds is becoming very difficult."

Industry outlooks suggest that this "heatwave inflation" may persist through mid-September [4]. While most summer vegetables are struggling, bitter melon remains a relatively affordable exception to the pricing trend [1].
