Japan PM orders water restoration in Kumamoto by August end

Prime Minister Takashi Takaichi ordered that all water outages in Kumamoto Prefecture be resolved by Aug. 31, 2026 ^[1].

The directive aims to stabilize basic infrastructure and improve the living conditions of displaced residents following a recent earthquake in the region. This move addresses critical failures in the water grid that have left numerous households without access to clean water.

He said that water services should be restored sequentially through early and mid-August, with the goal of complete resolution across all affected areas by the end of the month ^[1].

Beyond infrastructure, the administration announced the creation of evacuation shelters that accept pets. The decision follows numerous requests from residents who were unable to seek refuge in traditional shelters because they could not leave their animals behind.

Government officials said the new shelters are intended to prevent residents from avoiding evacuation due to the presence of pets. This policy change reflects a shift in disaster management to accommodate the emotional, and practical needs of pet owners during large-scale emergencies.
