Japanese importers expressed interest in small Thai durians during the Thaifex-Anuga Asia 2026 exhibition in Bangkok.
This shift in demand suggests a growing niche for smaller fruit varieties in the Japanese market, potentially opening new revenue streams for Thai farmers specializing in premium produce.
Wittayakorn Maneenetr, the director-general of the Department of Internal Trade, said Japanese buyers showed interest during the event. The exhibition served as a hub for connecting Thai agricultural producers with international distributors seeking high-quality goods.
The event saw a strong performance for Thailand's high-end farming sector. Orders for premium agricultural products totaled more than 334 million baht [1] at the trade fair.
These figures reflect the ongoing effort by Thai officials to diversify the export profiles of local crops. By targeting specific preferences in the Japanese market, such as the size of the durian, Thailand aims to secure more stable and lucrative trade partnerships.
The Thaifex-Anuga Asia exhibition remains a primary venue for the region's food and beverage industry to showcase innovation and quality to global buyers. The interest in small durians is part of a broader trend toward specialized agricultural exports that cater to the specific consumer habits of East Asian markets.
“Japanese importers expressed interest in small Thai durians”
The interest from Japanese importers indicates a strategic pivot toward 'specialty' sizing in the fruit trade. By tailoring agricultural output to the specific preferences of the Japanese market, Thailand can move away from bulk commodity competition and toward a high-value, premium model that increases the profit margins for local growers.
