A hydrogen-powered vehicle set a new world land speed record on Tuesday at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah [1, 2].
The achievement serves as a technical demonstration that hydrogen combustion can provide high performance while offering a zero-carbon alternative for heavy-machinery applications [0, 1].
The vehicle, named the Hydromax and developed by British engineering company JCB, reached a top speed of 406.320 mph [1]. The record-breaking run occurred on Aug. 11 [1, 2].
Retired Royal Air Force fighter pilot Andy Green drove the vehicle during the attempt [0, 1]. Green previously gained international recognition for breaking the sound barrier on land.
To achieve the speed, the Hydromax utilized two 800-horsepower hydrogen combustion engines [2]. This powertrain configuration allows the vehicle to maintain the power output of traditional internal combustion engines without the associated carbon emissions.
JCB designed the project to push the boundaries of hydrogen fuel capabilities. By testing the limits of speed and power in a controlled environment, the company aims to prove the viability of the technology for industrial use cases, such as construction and agriculture, where battery electric power may be insufficient for heavy-duty tasks [0, 1].
