French actor Jean Reno has launched his solo stage production, "JEAN RENO SOLO PERFORMANCE らくだ," at the Tokyo Arts Theater [1].
The production marks a significant cultural exchange between the French cinema icon and Japanese audiences, highlighting Reno's personal connection to the country.
Reno, 77 [4], is currently performing in Tokyo from May 10 to May 24, 2026 [3]. Following the Tokyo residency, he will embark on a nationwide tour visiting 11 Japanese cities through July 2026 [2].
During a press conference held on April 21 and 22, 2026 [4], the actor spoke about his decision to bring the show to Japan. When asked by reporters why he chose the country, Reno said, "Why not?" [5].
He said he loves Japan and did not want to miss the opportunity to perform there [5]. Reno described his affection for the nation as an intuitive feeling, comparing it to the love he has for his wife. He said that just as he cannot explain why he loves his wife, he cannot explain his love for Japan, but he loves everything about it [6].
The performance at the Tokyo Arts Theater's Theater West serves as the starting point for this extensive tour. The actor's presence in Japan for several months underscores a commitment to engaging with the local public beyond traditional film promotion.
“"Why not?"”
Jean Reno's transition from screen acting to a solo stage tour in Japan demonstrates a strategic effort to diversify his artistic presence in Asia. By choosing a nationwide tour over a single-city engagement, Reno is leveraging his global recognition to build a deeper, more intimate connection with Japanese audiences through live theater.
