Archaeologists led by excavation co-director Efrat Bocher discovered rare, well-preserved Iron Age wooden beams in Jerusalem [1].
The find provides critical physical evidence of the destruction of the First Temple, allowing scholars to better understand the collapse of the structure during the Babylonian siege.
The timbers date back to 586 BCE [1], the year historians identify as the time of the Babylonian destruction of Jerusalem [1]. These remains were found at the archaeological site associated with the First Temple in the Temple Mount area [1].
Because organic materials like wood rarely survive for millennia in the region, the preservation of these beams is unusual. The discovery was announced in July 2023 [2], timed ahead of the Tisha B’Av commemoration [2].
According to the team, the beams likely fell as the building was consumed by fire. The specific conditions of the collapse helped seal the wood away from the elements.
"During the destruction of the Temple, the beams likely collapsed onto the floor and were covered by the plaster cladding of the building’s walls, melted by the fire," Bocher said [1].
This physical evidence allows researchers to reconstruct the sequence of the fire, and the subsequent structural failure. The beams serve as a timestamp for the event, linking the archaeological layer directly to the historical narrative of the Babylonian conquest [1].
