A Jharkhand protester shaved his head and declared a symbolic funeral for three political leaders during a demonstration in Ranchi on Sunday.
The act highlights growing desperation among students and job seekers who allege widespread irregularities and a lack of transparency in the state's recruitment examinations. The protesters are targeting the JMM-Congress alliance, claiming the government has failed to take concrete action to resolve the crisis.
The demonstration took place outside the residence of Chief Minister Hemant Soren. Before shaving his head, the unnamed member of the JPSC-JSSC Reforms Manch burned effigies of Soren, Lok Sabha leader Rahul Gandhi, and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav [1, 2].
"They are as good as dead," the protester said [1].
The protest has now entered its 23rd day [1]. Participants have called for the resignation of the chief minister, arguing that the current administration is unresponsive to the needs of job aspirants. The symbolic funeral was intended to signal that the leaders are no longer serving the interests of the people.
"Cannot expect much from the dead," the protester said [2].
The JPSC-JSSC Reforms Manch represents aspirants affected by the recruitment processes of the Jharkhand Public Service Commission and the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission. These groups have repeatedly cited a lack of accountability in how exams are conducted, and graded.
Protesters have announced plans to escalate their actions. They intend to gherao, or surround, the residence of the chief minister on Aug. 20 [1].
“"They are as good as dead."”
This escalation reflects a deepening rift between the Jharkhand youth and the ruling coalition. By utilizing high-visibility symbolic protests, such as the shaving of heads and the burning of effigies, the JPSC-JSSC Reforms Manch is attempting to transform a bureaucratic grievance over exam transparency into a broader political crisis. The planned gherao of the Chief Minister's residence suggests that the movement is shifting from passive demonstration to direct confrontation.
