Actor Josh Hutcherson has partnered with Hill's Pet Nutrition for the "Clear the Shelters" pet-adoption campaign led by NBCUniversal Local.
The partnership leverages the visibility of a high-profile celebrity to encourage the adoption of shelter animals. By sharing his personal history with rescue dogs, Hutcherson aims to challenge stereotypes regarding specific breeds and highlight the benefits of adopting from shelters.
Hutcherson discussed the campaign alongside his pit bull, Driver, who has been his companion for about 11 years [1]. The actor adopted Driver around the time of the first "Hunger Games" film, which was released in 2012 [3].
"Driver has been by my side since the first Hunger Games movie, and he’s still my favorite companion," Hutcherson said.
Hutcherson currently owns two rescue pups [2]. His involvement with the campaign includes visiting shelters to advocate for animals awaiting permanent homes.
"I love spending time with all the adoptable animals," Hutcherson said.
The "Clear the Shelters" initiative works across various U.S. markets to reduce overcrowding in animal shelters. By partnering with corporate sponsors and media outlets, the campaign seeks to facilitate a higher volume of adoptions through increased public awareness and promotional support.
“"Driver has been by my side since the first Hunger Games movie, and he’s still my favorite companion."”
The use of celebrity endorsements in animal welfare campaigns serves to humanize rescue animals and shift public perception of breeds like pit bulls, which often face higher shelter stay durations due to stigma. By linking a long-term successful adoption story to a national campaign, the initiative attempts to increase the 'adoptability' of shelter pets through social proof.
