Joshmans Japan has released the TELIC FLIPFLOP ULTRASOFT, a recovery sandal designed to reduce walking impact by approximately 50% [1].
This development reflects a growing market for functional footwear that prioritizes physical recovery and fatigue reduction. As temperatures rise, consumers are increasingly seeking options that balance comfort with health benefits to maintain mobility during the summer months.
Based in Minato Ward, Tokyo, the urban sports specialty store Joshmans Japan launched the product in April 2023 [3]. The footwear is available at urban sports specialty stores across Japan and is priced at 8,690 yen [1]. The company said the sandals are intended to encourage fatigue recovery by mitigating the shock experienced by the feet while walking [3].
To determine the ideal time to transition to sandals, weather forecaster Manami Sakaguchi suggested a temperature threshold. "The point is 25 degrees Celsius," Sakaguchi said. "Just like with short sleeves, if it exceeds 25 degrees, you can wear them without feeling a chill" [1].
Data regarding consumer habits was gathered through a survey of 50 people conducted between March and July 2023 [1]. The findings showed a steady increase in sandal adoption as the season progressed. Only one person began wearing sandals in March, while four started in April [1]. The numbers rose to 13 people in May and nine in June, peaking at 15 people in July [1]. Additionally, eight participants reported wearing sandals throughout the entire year [1].
Caster Junna Yamagata noted the current variety of options available to consumers. "Now, many different types of sandals are coming out," Yamagata said [1].
“The point is 25 degrees Celsius... if it exceeds 25 degrees, you can wear them without feeling a chill.”
The rise of recovery-focused footwear indicates a shift in the Japanese urban sports market from purely aesthetic fashion to science-backed wellness products. By quantifying impact reduction and aligning usage with specific temperature thresholds, brands are targeting a health-conscious demographic that views footwear as a tool for physical maintenance rather than just seasonal clothing.
