Congress MP S. Jothimani said the Tamil Nadu chief minister pledged secularism, social justice, and corruption-free governance during the first TVK alliance coordination meeting.
This meeting signals a critical effort to align the TVK alliance's ideological goals as they seek to solidify their political standing in Tamil Nadu. The stability of this coalition is central to the state's current governance and future electoral strategy.
Speaking in Chennai on Thursday, Jothimani said the chief minister met with alliance members to exchange views and listen to their perspectives. According to the lawmaker, the chief minister reciprocated those views and said the government would be guided by honest governance [2].
"The people of Tamil Nadu are also very happy with his government," Jothimani said. "For us, supporting him means supporting good governance and service to Tamil Nadu. We are happy about that" [2].
While Jothimani expressed support for the state government's current direction, the alliance faces internal and external pressures. Recent political shifts include four AIADMK MLAs who resigned to join the TVK alliance [3].
This public show of support follows a period of internal friction within the party. Earlier this year, Jothimani said there were massive irregularities and large-scale corruption regarding the selection of Tamil Nadu Congress Assembly election candidates [1].
Despite those previous allegations, Jothimani's current comments emphasize a unified front. The lawmaker said the meeting served as a platform for the alliance to align on a shared agenda of service to the state [2].
“The Chief Minister reciprocated the same and assured us that this government will be guided by secularism, social justice, and corruption‑free, honest governance”
The public endorsement by Jothimani suggests a strategic effort by the Congress party to maintain a stable partnership within the TVK alliance, despite previous internal disputes over candidate selection. The absorption of former AIADMK members further indicates a consolidation of power by the TVK-led coalition, aiming to broaden its base by incorporating political dissidents from opposing camps.
