Artist JR began installing a large inflatable artwork titled “La Caverne du Pont-Neuf” on the Pont Neuf in Paris on May 11, 2024 [1].
The project transforms one of the city's most historic landmarks into a temporary immersive space. By revisiting a site of previous artistic intervention, JR connects contemporary street art with the legacy of large-scale environmental installations in the French capital.
The installation spans approximately 120 meters [2]. It serves as a tribute to the work of artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude, who famously packed the same bridge in fabric 41 years ago [1]. This new work seeks to evoke the spirit of that 1985 project while utilizing modern inflatable materials to create a cavern-like experience for pedestrians.
Construction of the site started in mid-May to ensure the structure was secure before the public opening [1]. The artwork will be open to visitors from June 6, 2024, through June 28, 2024 [2].
JR is known for his large-scale public installations that often focus on identity and community. This specific project shifts the focus toward architectural dialogue and historical memory, using the physical space of the bridge to bridge two different eras of public art. The temporary nature of the installation mirrors the ephemeral quality of Christo and Jeanne-Claude's original work, which existed for only a short window of time before being removed.
“The installation spans approximately 120 meters.”
This installation represents a continuation of the 'wrapping' and 'intervening' tradition in urban art. By referencing the 1985 packing of Pont Neuf, JR is not merely creating a new spectacle but is engaging in a historical conversation about how public infrastructure can be temporarily reclaimed as a canvas for artistic expression.
