A 58-year-old woman died Sunday after her pickup truck plunged approximately 80 meters [1] down a cliff in Jujuy, Argentina.
The accident occurred in a high-altitude region known for steep terrain, highlighting the dangers facing tourists and locals navigating the province's mountain roads.
The incident took place around 16:30 [4] on Sunday, Aug. 16, at the Cuesta de Lipán. The vehicle was traveling at kilometer 30 [5] of the highway, identified by some reports as Provincial Route 52 [1] and by others as National Route 52 [3].
Authorities said the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and fall down the embankment. The 58-year-old woman [2] died as a result of the crash. Four other people, who are members of her family, were injured in the plunge [3].
Emergency responders reached the site to recover the victims from the ravine. The steep drop of 80 meters [1] complicated the recovery efforts in the rugged landscape of the Cuesta de Lipán.
Local reports indicate the group was traveling through the area when the vehicle left the roadway. While the exact cause of the loss of control has not been detailed, the severity of the fall resulted in one fatality and four injuries [3].

The Cuesta de Lipán is a prominent tourist attraction in Jujuy known for its winding roads and extreme elevation. This accident underscores the inherent risks of navigating the region's steep topography, where a single loss of vehicle control can lead to catastrophic falls due to the lack of safety barriers in several high-altitude sections.
