Democratic Party leader Jung Chung-rae said he agreed with President Lee Jae-myung's critical assessment of the June 3, 2024 [1], local election results this week.
The admission follows a period of intense internal party tension. By accepting the president's criticism, Jung aims to maintain party unity while navigating the fallout from a disappointing electoral performance that has prompted calls for leadership changes.
Jung spoke during the first top-committee meeting held after the elections, which took place four days [2] after he resumed his public schedule. During the session in Seoul, Jung said the outcome was severe and the president's critique was valid.
"I empathize with President Lee Jae-myung's evaluation and perception of the June 3 local elections," Jung said. "I will reflect on what needs to be reflected, and I will introspect on what needs to be introspected."
Despite the public apology and the pledge of self-reflection, Jung said he would not step down from his position. He pointed to his political tenure of more than 20 years [3] as a foundation for his continued service to the party.
Jung said it is necessary to maintain a humble approach toward the electorate regardless of the party's current status in government. He noted that the public supports parties based on whether they act according to their designated roles.
"When the opposition party is like an opposition party and the ruling party is like a ruling party, the people have always supported them selectively," Jung said. "I believe the attitude of observing the people's will should always be our basic posture, whether we are the ruling party or the opposition party."
The meeting served as a formal venue for the Democratic Party to address the strategic failures of the 2024 local elections. While Jung's refusal to resign may spark further debate within the party, his public alignment with the president's views is seen as a move to stifle open rebellion within the top committee.
“"I will reflect on what needs to be reflected, and I will introspect on what needs to be introspected."”
Jung Chung-rae's decision to accept criticism without resigning suggests a strategic effort to balance accountability with political survival. By aligning himself with President Lee's assessment, he neutralizes the immediate pressure for his removal while attempting to project a sense of party discipline and stability following a significant electoral setback.
