Kamal Haasan said that not inviting Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay to form the Tamil Nadu government would disrespect the people's mandate.
This statement arrives amid a volatile political landscape in Tamil Nadu, where the distribution of power following the election has become a point of contention. The ability of a new political entity like the TVK to lead the state could shift the long-standing power dynamics between established parties.
Haasan, the chief of Makkal Needhi Maiyam, made these remarks during post-election activities in Coimbatore and Chennai. He said the current election results created an unprecedented situation. According to Haasan, excluding Vijay from the process of government formation would effectively ignore the verdict delivered by the voters.
"Not inviting Vijay to form the government would disrespect Tamil Nadu's mandate," Haasan said.
The political tension is further complicated by strategic alliances. Reports indicate that the ruling DMK has deployed Haasan against Vijay in high-stakes battles within Chennai. Despite these tactical deployments by the DMK, Haasan continues to emphasize the necessity of respecting the electoral outcome regarding the TVK leader.
Haasan's position suggests that the legitimacy of the next administration depends on the inclusion of the TVK, regardless of the ruling party's tactical preferences. He said that the mandate is clear and that the democratic process requires the leader of the TVK to be given the opportunity to form the government.
“Not inviting Vijay to form the government would disrespect Tamil Nadu's mandate.”
The public support from Kamal Haasan for Vijay signals a potential realignment of forces in Tamil Nadu politics. By framing the invitation of the TVK chief as a matter of democratic respect rather than political convenience, Haasan is challenging the DMK's current strategy. This puts pressure on the ruling party to either accommodate the TVK or risk accusations of defying the public will.
