Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced Thursday that he will resign from his post and proposed Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar as his successor.
The transition marks a significant shift in state leadership, triggered by a party-level decision to adhere to a 2023 rotational formula established by the Congress high command.
Siddaramaiah shared the decision during a breakfast meeting with cabinet colleagues at his residence in Bengaluru [1, 2]. The announcement follows orders from the party leadership for the current chief minister to step down and hand over governance to Shivakumar [2, 3].
Minister H.K. Patil confirmed the timing of the transition. "The Chief Minister will resign at 3 o’clock," Patil said. "Siddaramaiah said that we will make D.K. Shivakumar the new Chief Minister" [1].
The planned resignation is scheduled for 3 p.m. on May 28, 2024 [1, 4]. While some reports initially suggested the resignation might occur on a different date or remained speculative, the announcement at the Bengaluru residence provided a specific timeline for the change of guard [2, 3, 4].
Shivakumar, who currently serves as the deputy chief minister, is expected to take over the leadership role immediately following the formal resignation process. The move is intended to satisfy internal party agreements regarding the distribution of power within the state's executive branch [2, 3].
“The Chief Minister will resign at 3 o’clock.”
This leadership change is the result of a pre-negotiated power-sharing agreement within the Karnataka Congress party. By implementing the 2023 rotational formula, the party aims to maintain internal stability and balance ambitions between its top leaders, though the sudden nature of the transition may create short-term administrative shifts in the state government.
