Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah submitted his resignation to the Governor’s office in Bengaluru on Thursday morning [1].
The transition marks the end of a three-year internal leadership dispute [3] within the state's Congress party. The move follows a directive from the party high command to resolve the friction between the outgoing chief minister and his successor.
Siddaramaiah was accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar when he delivered the resignation [1]. Shivakumar is expected to take the oath of office on June 1, 2024 [4].
"I have given my resignation," Siddaramaiah said [2].
He expressed confidence that the Governor would accept the resignation in accordance with constitutional provisions [2]. The resignation concludes a period of tension that had persisted within the party ranks for three years [3].
Shivakumar, who has served as the deputy chief minister, is now positioned to take full control of the state administration. The handover is intended to stabilize the party's leadership structure in the region [1].
"I am confident Governor would accept my resignation as per Constitutional provisions," Siddaramaiah said [2].
“"I have given my resignation."”
This leadership change resolves a prolonged power struggle within the Karnataka Congress. By adhering to the high command's decision, the party aims to consolidate its authority and eliminate internal friction before the new chief minister takes office, ensuring a smoother administrative transition in Bengaluru.
