Congress MP Karti Chidambaram said the party collectively decided to remain in an alliance with the DMK despite the rise of the TVK.

The decision comes as the Congress party navigates a shifting political landscape in Tamil Nadu, where the emergence of the TVK has created new competition for regional influence.

Chidambaram said the alliance choice followed wide-ranging consultations. He said the decision was intended to preserve a relationship between the two parties that has lasted 22 years [1]. This long-term partnership remains a central pillar of the Congress strategy in the state as it prepares for upcoming polls.

Addressing the impact of the TVK, Chidambaram praised the party's debut. However, he said he was confident that the existing alliance would prevail. He said the DMK will win convincingly [2].

Chidambaram also highlighted the leadership of the DMK, saying that Chief Minister MK Stalin's image is very good [3]. By emphasizing Stalin's popularity, the MP suggested that the alliance's strength lies in the current leadership's public standing.

When questioned about the timing and strategy of the alliance in light of new political challengers, Chidambaram said, "In hindsight, everybody is a genius" [4].

The MP spoke in Pudukkottai, where he said the party's strategy was a result of collective deliberation rather than individual preference. He said the stability of the 22-year bond [1] outweighs the immediate pressure to pivot toward newer political entities.

"DMK will win convincingly"

The insistence on a 'collective decision' and the emphasis on a two-decade partnership suggest that Congress is prioritizing stability and established networks over the risk of aligning with volatile new movements like the TVK. By tying its fortunes to MK Stalin's personal popularity, Congress is betting that the DMK's organizational machinery is the most reliable path to victory in the upcoming Tamil Nadu elections.
