Kazakhstan's Ministry of Ecology released a female Amur tiger named Umit into the wild on July 31, 2026 [1, 3].
The release marks a significant step in a long-term ecological project to restore the Turan tiger population to its historic range. Because these animals have been absent from the region for 70 years [1], the initiative aims to rebuild a lost apex predator presence to balance the local ecosystem.
Umit was released into the Ile-Balkhash State Nature Reserve [4, 5]. She is among four tigers donated by Russia to support the re-introduction effort [2]. The Amur tiger, also known as the Siberian tiger [6], serves as a genetic proxy to help bring back the extinct Caspian tiger lineage.
Environmental officials said the process involved a decade of preparatory work. This effort included the planting of 37,000 trees to ensure the habitat could support the needs of the large cats [7].
