Keisha Lance Bottoms (D-GA) won the Georgia Democratic gubernatorial primary on Tuesday in June 2026.
The victory establishes Bottoms as the Democratic nominee in a high-stakes race to lead the state, positioning her as the primary opponent to the Republican nominee in November.
Bottoms captured 56% of the Democratic primary vote [1]. By surpassing the majority threshold, she avoided a runoff election [1]. Following the win, the former Atlanta mayor said she is "not taking anybody for granted."
Bottoms framed her candidacy as a necessary shield against the current administration. She said, "We need someone who is going to stand up, push back against all of the craziness coming from the Trump White House."
Her platform focuses on healthcare, education, and the redrawing of voting-rights maps. Bottoms vowed to fight maps that she said weaken Black voting power. She also said that Georgia voters care more about costs than the "MAGA agenda."
While Bottoms has secured her spot on the general election ballot, the Republican side remains unsettled. Republican candidates are scheduled for a June runoff to determine who will face Bottoms in November. Some reports indicate she may face either Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones or healthcare executive Rick Jackson, though the final nominee has not yet been determined.
Bottoms said she intends to offer a Democratic alternative to candidates she characterizes as aligned with the MAGA agenda. She continues to campaign on a platform of expanding public services, and protecting voting access across the state.
“I’m not taking anybody for granted.”
Bottoms' decisive primary victory allows her to consolidate Democratic resources and funding earlier than if she had been forced into a runoff. By centering her campaign on a direct opposition to the Trump administration and focusing on voting rights, she is attempting to mobilize a coalition of urban voters and minority communities to flip or hold Georgia's executive branch.
