The United Democratic Front (UDF) is leading the count as results emerge from the 140 [1] Assembly constituencies in the Kerala 2026 elections.
These results determine the composition of the Kerala Legislative Assembly and the identity of the next chief minister. A shift in power could alter the state's governance following the losses suffered by the Left Democratic Front (LDF).
Vote counting began at 8 a.m. [2] on Monday, May 4, 2026 [3]. Early tallies show the UDF leading in 97 seats [5], while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won three seats [4].
VD Satheesan, leader of the Indian National Congress in Kerala, addressed the media regarding the race for the chief minister's office. Satheesan said the party high command will make the final decision once the electoral process is fully completed [6].
Satheesan previously urged patience regarding the outcome of the vote. "I don't want to say anything about the results. Let us wait for the election results to be fully out before I comment," Satheesan said [7].
The LDF, led by Pinarayi Vijayan, is fighting to hold its ground amid reports of significant losses. Final results are expected to be declared later today [3].
Satheesan said that the leadership transition remains a matter for the party's central authority. "The decision on Kerala's next chief minister will be taken by the party high command after the electoral process is fully completed," Satheesan said [6].
“The UDF is leading in 97 seats as vote counting progresses.”
The current lead by the UDF suggests a potential change in government in Kerala, ending the tenure of the Pinarayi Vijayan-led LDF. By deferring the appointment of a chief minister to the party high command, the Congress leadership is avoiding premature internal conflict and ensuring that the final mandate is fully verified before claiming the premiership.
