Kerala excise officials arrested four people [2] after seizing 116.37 kg [1] of suspected ganja in Thrissur district.
The operation underscores the persistent struggle against narcotics smuggling in southern India. By disrupting the transport of large quantities of cannabis, officials aim to curb the availability of illegal substances within local communities.
The seizure occurred on Aug. 25, 2023, during a routine vehicle check, an excise official said. The operation resulted in the recovery of 116.37 kg [1] of the suspected drug, which was being transported through the region.
Four individuals were taken into custody and are being investigated, a police spokesperson said. The arrests are part of a broader effort by the Kerala Excise Department to dismantle drug trafficking networks operating within the state.
The department continues to increase surveillance on transit corridors to prevent the movement of contraband. A Kerala Excise Department official said the event highlights the continued challenge of drug trafficking in the region.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of the four suspects. The seized material has been sent for further testing to confirm its composition, while the investigation into the source and intended destination of the shipment continues.
“"The seizure was made during a routine vehicle check."”
This seizure reflects the ongoing tactical focus of Kerala's excise authorities on intercepting narcotics during transit. The volume of the shipment suggests an organized attempt to move bulk quantities of cannabis into the Thrissur district, indicating that despite increased checkpoints, smuggling routes remain active in the region.
