Kevin McKidd revealed that his character, Owen Hunt, avoided a planned death in the Season 22 [1] finale of Grey's Anatomy.

The change in plot marks a significant shift for one of the series' long-term characters, moving from a tragic exit to a hopeful resolution for the character's arc.

McKidd, who also directed the finale, discussed the creative process in interviews with Yahoo Entertainment and Yardbarker. He said the original plan for the episode involved killing off the character. However, the production team eventually decided to pivot toward a positive outcome for the character and his relationship with Teddy Altman.

"I was originally going to kill Owen, but we decided to give him a happy ending with Teddy," McKidd said.

The actor noted that the shift in direction provided a more satisfying conclusion for the viewers and the characters involved. He said it turned out to be a beautiful ending for Owen and Teddy, something the team felt good about.

McKidd's role as director allowed him to influence the final presentation of the scene. He said directing the finale gave him a chance to shape Owen’s last moments the way he wanted.

The Season 22 [1] finale, which aired in May 2024, serves as the closing chapter for the character's journey on the show. While some reports initially suggested a standard departure for both Owen and Teddy, the final cut focused on their reunion. This decision reflects a broader trend in long-running dramas to provide closure that rewards character growth over shock value.

"I was originally going to kill Owen, but we decided to give him a happy ending with Teddy."

The decision to pivot from a character death to a happy ending suggests a preference for emotional resolution over dramatic tragedy in the show's later seasons. By allowing McKidd to direct and influence the outcome, the production ensured the exit aligned with the character's long-term development, prioritizing a legacy of hope for the audience.
