Actor Kevin McKidd revealed he originally planned for his character Owen Hunt to die in the Season 22 finale of Grey's Anatomy [1].
The revelation provides insight into the creative tension between cast and writers during the departure of a long-standing character on one of television's longest-running dramas.
McKidd, who played the trauma surgeon, expressed a desire for a more dramatic exit. "I wanted an epic death for Owen, but the writers wanted something different, so we went with a happy goodbye," McKidd said [3].
The character's departure occurred in Episode 18 [1], titled “Take Me to the River,” which aired on Thursday, May 23, 2024 [2]. Instead of the tragedy McKidd envisioned, the episode concluded with Owen leaving alongside Teddy Altman.
McKidd noted that the change in direction happened late in the production process. "We were definitely talking about a tragic ending for Owen, but the story changed at the last minute," McKidd said [2].
Despite the shift in plot, the actor remained supportive of the final outcome. "I was originally going to have Owen die in the finale, but we decided to give him a beautiful ending with Teddy," McKidd said [1].
The decision to avoid a character death allowed the series to provide closure for the relationship between Owen and Teddy, a central plot point for several seasons, rather than ending the arc with a loss.
“"I wanted an epic death for Owen, but the writers wanted something different."”
The shift from a tragic death to a happy departure reflects a common creative struggle in long-running procedurals, where the desire for 'shock value' or 'epic' finales often clashes with the writers' goal of providing emotional closure and character satisfaction for the audience.
