A stacked high-pressure heat dome is driving extreme temperatures across the Korean Peninsula with perceived heat exceeding 35 °C [1].
This weather pattern is significant because it combines atmospheric pressure with warming oceans to extend the duration of the summer heat. While the peak of the heat dome may pass, the environmental conditions suggest a prolonged period of distress for the region.
The current extreme heat is the result of two high-pressure systems stacked vertically over the peninsula and surrounding seas [1, 2]. This formation traps hot air near the surface, creating a dome effect that prevents cooler air from entering the region. Experts said this specific heat dome structure will persist until mid-August [2].
However, the cooling process will be slowed by the state of the surrounding oceans. Sea-surface temperatures around the peninsula are currently one to two °C above the long-term average [1]. Meteorological experts said this warming is a result of climate change.
These elevated ocean temperatures act as a thermal reservoir, feeding heat back into the atmosphere even after the atmospheric dome dissipates. Because of this, unusually hot conditions are expected to linger well into the autumn transition.
Kong Hang-jin, a YTN disaster advisory committee member, said that while temperatures typically drop slightly after the first half of August, the heat is expected to continue until mid-September [1].
Residents are advised to remain cautious as the region transitions out of the peak summer months. The combination of atmospheric pressure and oceanic warmth creates a persistent cycle of high heat that deviates from historical norms.
