Heat waves on the Korean Peninsula have increased 2.2 times and tropical nights three times over the last 10 years [1].
These shifts indicate a significant acceleration in regional warming, forcing a reconfiguration of how the peninsula manages summer heat and public health risks.
The Korea Meteorological Administration based these findings on an analysis of 53 years of observation data [1]. By comparing the most recent 10-year period to the preceding decade, officials found that the frequency of extreme heat has grown sharply. Tropical nights, where temperatures remain high throughout the night, saw an even steeper rise, increasing three times [1].
The timing of the summer heat has also shifted. Heat-wave start dates have moved earlier by up to approximately 30 days [1]. This shift means that extreme heat is now increasingly common starting in June, while the season continues to extend later into the year.
"In the last 10 years, the start date of heat waves in our country has been moved forward by up to about 30 days compared to the previous 10 years, and they are increasing from June," said Lee Won-gil, a notification officer at the Korea Meteorological Administration [1].
The data suggests that the experience of summer on the peninsula is fundamentally changing. Residents are facing a climate where the period of intense heat is not only more frequent but also lasts longer throughout the calendar year [1].
