Kong Hang-jin, an airport meteorologist and YTN disaster advisory committee member, said that the linear nature of the clouds is a key indicator of the current weather state. The flatness of the formation suggests that the atmosphere is not unstable [1, 2].

According to Kong, this specific pattern occurs when a layer of dry air moves in over a layer of moist air [1, 2]. This interaction creates a flat, stable cloud formation rather than the vertical growth typically associated with unstable air and storm development.

Kong said that the appearance of these clouds is often accompanied by a change in the sky's color. He said that the arrival of a blue sky indicates that dry air is moving into the region [1].

"The clouds are connected in a straight line. If you look at the clouds, they are flat," Kong said. "The fact that they are flat means they are not unstable, but stable" [1].

This meteorological phenomenon provides a clear visual cue for the transition between different air masses. When the dry air pushes the moist air, the resulting boundary often manifests as these distinct, linear clouds before the dry air fully dominates the local atmosphere [1, 2].
