South Korea will launch a large-scale K-pop festival called Fanomenon in December 2024 [1].
The event aims to create a domestic hub for Korean culture, addressing a perceived lack of major home-grown festivals despite the global popularity of K-pop. By consolidating concerts, award shows, and corporate programs, organizers intend to provide a comprehensive experience for fans within South Korea.
Billed as the “Korean Coachella,” Fanomenon is a portmanteau of the English words "fan" and "phenomenon" [1]. The festival will be backed by Korean companies and is expected to feature a lineup of high-profile artists, including BIGBANG, LE SSERAFIM, and members of BLACKPINK such as Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa [1, 2].
The festivities are scheduled to take place at the Seoul Changdong Arena [1, 2]. This venue is a critical component of the festival's infrastructure and is scheduled to open in May 2025 [1].
Organizers described the event as a comprehensive gift set of K-culture [1]. The festival will integrate traditional concert formats with industry-led corporate programs to showcase the breadth of the nation's cultural exports.
"K-pop and our cultural contents are gaining a lot of popularity overseas, but there is still no large-scale festival where we can enjoy our culture in one place," a YTN News anchor said [1].
Reporter Park Soon-pyo said that Korean companies will take the lead in hosting the large-scale festival centered on K-pop next December [1]. Park further said that Fanomenon is a festival where K-pop concerts, award ceremonies, and various programs from K-culture companies can be seen in one place [1].
“The event, dubbed the “Korean Coachella,” will feature major artists and corporate programs.”
The creation of Fanomenon signals a strategic shift to monetize and institutionalize K-pop's global success within its own borders. By building a dedicated infrastructure like the Seoul Changdong Arena and partnering with major corporations, South Korea is attempting to move beyond fragmented concert tours toward a sustainable, destination-based festival model that can attract both domestic fans and international tourists.
