K.T. Rama Rao urged the Telangana government to complete construction and make the Telangana Institute of Medical Sciences (TIMS) hospital accessible to the public [1].
The request highlights a critical gap in public health infrastructure for low-income residents in Hyderabad. Opening the facility would provide a state-run alternative to expensive private corporate hospitals.
Rama Rao, the working president of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi, visited the Sanathnagar site on May 15, 2024 [1]. During the visit, he said the remaining construction and operational works should be completed immediately [2].
According to Rama Rao, the project was designed to bridge the gap between high-end private care and basic public services. He said the facility is intended to offer world-class medical services to those who cannot afford private treatment [3].
"TIMS hospitals were conceptualized to provide world‑class, AIIMS‑level healthcare to the poor in Hyderabad, strengthening public health infrastructure to compete with private corporate hospitals," Rama Rao said [3].
The BRS leader said the hospital's primary goal is to ensure that the city's most vulnerable populations have access to advanced diagnostics and treatment [3]. He said the facility's ability to compete with corporate entities depends on its prompt operationalization [2].
Rama Rao urged the current administration to prioritize the final stages of the project to prevent further delays in patient care [1].
“"TIMS hospitals were conceptualized to provide world‑class, AIIMS‑level healthcare to the poor in Hyderabad"”
The push to operationalize the TIMS hospital reflects a broader political and social effort to decentralize high-quality healthcare in Telangana. By aiming for 'AIIMS-level' standards, the project seeks to reduce the dependency of the urban poor on costly private healthcare providers and improve the overall public health safety net in Hyderabad.
