A recovery committee met for the first time on Aug. 6 to discuss repairing a bridge on the Minami Kyushu Expressway in Kumamoto Prefecture [4].
The meeting marks the first formal step toward reopening a critical transit artery that remains closed after a July 28 earthquake [3]. The damage occurred near the Yatsushiro Junction, where the Minami Kyushu Expressway and Kyushu Expressway merge.
According to Nexco West Japan, the earthquake caused the ground to rise and sink, which pushed bridge girders off their piers in two locations across the inbound and outbound lanes [2]. This movement created a vertical gap in the road surface. Reports on the exact size of the displacement vary, with one source citing a gap of approximately one meter [2] and another stating it is about 1.5 meters [1].
Taiji Matsuda, the chairman of the recovery committee, noted the severity of the structural failure. He said the incident is a case of disaster damage that is rare even within Japan [5].
Engineers and officials are now evaluating how to stabilize the bridge and reset the girders to ensure the safety of future motorists. The committee's primary objective is to establish a timeline for early restoration while addressing the complex geological shifts that caused the failure.
Because the bridge girders were completely displaced from their supports, the project requires specialized engineering solutions rather than standard road repairs. The committee will continue to meet to determine the most effective method for realignment, and reinforcement.
