A simultaneous fireworks festival planned for three cities around Lake Biwa was abruptly canceled on Aug. 9 [2].
The sudden collapse of the event leaves ticket holders and local residents without answers, as the organizers have failed to provide an official reason for the cancellation.
The event was scheduled to take place on Aug. 22 [1] across Hikone, Nagahama, and Takashima in Shiga Prefecture [2]. Organizers had planned to launch more than 10,000 fireworks [1], with some premium paid seats priced at 19,000 yen [1].
Local governments have since issued statements to clarify that they were not involved in the planning or management of the festival. Hikone City said, "Hikone City is not involved."
Takashima City said there are no fireworks festivals in which the city is involved in the planning or operation. Nagahama City said all inquiries regarding the event should be directed to the organizers.
The timing of the announcement, made just two weeks before the scheduled date, has caused significant confusion. Many attendees have reported an inability to contact the organizers to seek refunds or further information.
Despite the scale of the planned display, the organizers have remained silent. The three cities involved continue to distance themselves from the event's failure to launch.

The disconnect between the event's branding and the actual involvement of the three municipalities suggests a potential misuse of city names to lend legitimacy to a private venture. Because the cities have explicitly denied any role in the operation, ticket holders may find it difficult to seek government assistance for refunds, leaving them solely dependent on the now-unreachable organizers.
