Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said Friday that Lebanon is seeking U.S. guarantees to help the country restore its sovereignty and territorial integrity [1].

These efforts come as Lebanon navigates a volatile security landscape and an ongoing conflict with Israel. Securing international assurances is seen as a critical step in preventing further escalation and stabilizing the nation's borders.

Speaking in an interview with Al Jazeera in Beirut on May 8 [1], Salam said external support is necessary to ensure the safety of Lebanese lands. He said, "We are seeking to obtain American guarantees that contribute to Lebanon restoring its sovereignty and the integrity of its lands."

Beyond the request for U.S. involvement, Salam said the Lebanese government is pursuing a comprehensive diplomatic strategy to end the hostilities. He said that Lebanon is seeking a permanent solution through a diplomatic path [2].

The Prime Minister also signaled a willingness to engage in direct or indirect communication to resolve the dispute. Salam said that Lebanon is prepared to discuss any negotiation formula with Israel [3].

This openness to negotiation suggests a shift toward diplomatic flexibility in hopes of achieving a lasting ceasefire. By engaging both the U.S. as a guarantor and Israel as a negotiating partner, the Lebanese administration aims to secure a framework that recognizes its national borders, and mitigates the risk of renewed military conflict.

The Lebanese government's explicit request for U.S. guarantees reflects a strategic reliance on Washington to act as a mediator and security guarantor. By expressing willingness to negotiate any formula with Israel, the administration is prioritizing diplomatic stabilization over military confrontation, signaling that a negotiated settlement is the primary path to restoring territorial control.
