The Communist Party of India (CPI) and Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) are likely to support Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party.
This potential alliance could determine the leadership of Tamil Nadu, as TVK currently lacks the majority required to govern alone. The movement of these left parties may provide the necessary legislative numbers to secure a stable administration.
TVK won more than 100 seats in the recent Tamil Nadu election [1]. Despite this performance, the party fell short of a majority by about 10 seats [2]. This gap has stalled the official oath-taking process as the party seeks coalition partners to bridge the deficit.
A CPI(M) leader said, "We are making all efforts to ensure that TVK gets the support it needs to form the government."
While the left parties signal support, other political entities remain opposed. An AIADMK deputy general secretary said, "Under no circumstances will AIADMK support TVK."
The political landscape remains volatile as other parties negotiate. The DMK has asked the AIADMK to dump the BJP and warned against tying up with any "communal party."
If the coalition is finalized, Vijay is scheduled to take the oath as Tamil Nadu chief minister at 11 a.m. tomorrow [3].
“TVK fell short of the majority by about 10 seats.”
The potential alignment of the CPI and CPM with TVK represents a strategic shift to prevent a coalition between the DMK and AIADMK. Because TVK is only 10 seats away from a majority, the support of these left parties is mathematically sufficient to install Vijay as chief minister, provided no other major bloc forms a larger counter-coalition.
