Lenovo has announced the Tab Plus Gen 2, an Android tablet featuring nine built-in speakers and a specialized rear speaker bump [1].
The device targets users who prioritize media consumption by merging tablet functionality with the capabilities of a standalone Bluetooth speaker. By integrating a high-fidelity audio system, Lenovo said it aims to reduce the need for external speakers during home entertainment.
The most notable physical change is the increased thickness of the rear speaker bump, which now measures 22.7 mm [1]. This is a significant increase from the original Tab Plus, which featured a bump of 13.58 mm [1]. To support this heavier profile, the tablet includes an upgraded kickstand to maintain stability during use.
Beyond the audio hardware, the Tab Plus Gen 2 includes a 12.1-inch screen [6]. The display offers a resolution of 2,560 by 1,600 pixels, and a refresh rate of 120 Hz [6]. For visibility in various lighting conditions, the screen reaches a maximum brightness of 800 nits [6].
The audio system is designed to be versatile. In addition to playing internal media, the tablet contains a built-in JBL Bluetooth speaker [3]. This allows the device to function as a speaker for other Bluetooth-connected devices, effectively turning the tablet into a room-filling audio hub [4].
Lenovo said it has priced the Tab Plus Gen 2 at $400 [6].
“The tablet contains a built-in JBL Bluetooth speaker.”
Lenovo is attempting to carve out a niche in the saturated tablet market by pivoting away from productivity and toward a 'home theater' hybrid. By sacrificing the slim profile typical of modern tablets to accommodate a 22.7 mm speaker bump, the company is betting that consumers value superior integrated audio over portability.
