Lionel Messi has been named the winner of the Princess of Asturias Award for Sports 2026, the foundation said Wednesday morning.
The honor recognizes one of the most decorated athletes in history, blending his on-field dominance with a long-term commitment to global philanthropy. It elevates the award's profile by associating it with a figure who transcends the sport of football.
A jury of 13 members, including 12 experts and president Teresa Perales, selected Messi from a pool of 27 candidates representing 12 nationalities [1]. The foundation said his unique career and numerous titles were primary factors for the selection [2].
Beyond his trophies, the jury highlighted his social contributions. The group noted his "dazzling talent, his exceptional sporting trajectory and his formidable and continued solidarity work to promote access to education and the care of the health of the most [vulnerable] children" [3].
Messi's professional record supports the decision. He has played in more than 1,000 professional matches [4], scoring more than 800 goals and providing around 400 assists [4]. The award committee said his "unique trajectory" and his consistent support for social causes were key [2].
The formal presentation will take place on Friday, Oct. 24, 2026 [5]. The ceremony is scheduled to be held at the Teatro Campoamor in Oviedo, Spain [5].
