Lok Sabha Speaker Approves Merger of Shiv Sena UBT MPs into Shinde Faction

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla approved the merger of six Shiv Sena (UBT) members of parliament with the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction.

The decision significantly shifts the balance of power within the party's split factions and strengthens the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) bloc in the lower house. This move reduces the legislative influence of the faction led by Uddhav Thackeray.

The merger officially increases the Lok Sabha strength of the Shinde-led faction to 13 MPs ^[2]. Conversely, the Shiv Sena (UBT) faction has been reduced to three MPs ^[1]. The shift follows a period of political instability and legal disputes regarding the legitimate leadership of the party.

Shrikant Shinde, an MP with the Shiv Sena, said the move strengthens the NDA and the party's ability to raise Maharashtra's issues in Parliament.

However, the transition has not been without criticism. Anand Dubey, a Shiv Sena spokesperson, said the development represented a "weakened democracy".

The recognition of the merger by the Speaker provides the Shinde faction with greater institutional legitimacy in New Delhi. This consolidation allows the Eknath Shinde-led group to operate as a more formidable unit within the ruling coalition, enhancing their leverage during legislative debates and policy discussions.

The remaining three MPs in the UBT camp now face a diminished role in the Lok Sabha ^[1]. The loss of six members removes a significant portion of their voting power and their ability to coordinate larger blocks of opposition within the house.
