Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced a roadmap to transform the state into a trillion-dollar AI and technology powerhouse [1].
The initiative, termed the "Maharashtra Decade," represents a strategic shift toward integrating artificial intelligence into governance and primary industries to drive economic growth.
Speaking during a fireside chat at the ImagiNXT 2026 conference, Fadnavis detailed the state's ambition to reach a valuation of 1 trillion USD [1]. This vision includes the deployment of AI-driven tools across education and other public sectors to modernize service delivery.
A central pillar of this strategy is the Mah-Agri AI policy, which spans the period from 2025 to 2029 [2]. The policy focuses on empowering farmers through smart farming techniques and increasing agricultural productivity via technology.
"... Under our Mah-Agri AI policy 2025-29, we adopted a policy-led, ecosystem-driven model, built on openness and interoperability..." Fadnavis said [2].
To implement these goals, the state has signed AI agreements and launched specific tools designed for immediate application in Maharashtra [3]. These tools aim to create a more efficient administrative framework by reducing reliance on manual processes.
The Chief Minister said that the state's approach relies on an open ecosystem to ensure that technological advancements remain accessible and interoperable across different platforms [2]. This framework is intended to attract global investment while supporting local innovation.
“Maharashtra aims to become a trillion-dollar AI and technology powerhouse.”
By targeting a trillion-dollar valuation through AI, Maharashtra is attempting to pivot from a traditional manufacturing and agricultural hub to a high-tech economy. The specific focus on agriculture suggests a strategy to mitigate rural economic volatility through precision technology, while the broader 'Maharashtra Decade' roadmap seeks to position the state as the primary competitor for AI investment within India.
