Mahua Moitra, a Trinamool Congress (TMC) Lok Sabha MP from Krishnanagar, filed a formal harassment complaint after being heckled on an IndiGo flight [1, 2].
The incident highlights the increasing tension between political figures and the public in India, where targeted harassment can occur during routine travel.
Moitra was traveling to Delhi on Friday, May 8, 2026 [1], to attend a meeting of a parliamentary standing committee on defence [3, 4]. During the flight, passengers began chanting "chor, chor TMC chor" and "Jai Shree Ram" [1, 3]. The word "chor" translates to "thief" in English.
Moitra said the chants constituted targeted political harassment based on her affiliation with the TMC [3, 5]. She subsequently filed a formal complaint seeking legal action against the individuals involved in the disruption [1, 5].
The MP's journey was intended for official government business, but the encounter turned into a political confrontation within the aircraft cabin [3, 4]. The use of religious and political slogans in a confined public space has raised concerns regarding the safety and dignity of elected officials during transit.
IndiGo has not yet released an official statement regarding the specific measures taken during the flight to manage the passengers [1, 2]. Moitra said authorities must ensure that such behavior does not go unpunished, citing the need for a secure environment for representatives of the people [5].
“Mahua Moitra filed a formal harassment complaint after being heckled on an IndiGo flight.”
This incident reflects the deepening polarization within Indian political discourse, where religious and political slogans are increasingly used as tools of public confrontation. By filing a formal complaint, Moitra is attempting to establish a legal boundary against political heckling in public transport, signaling a shift toward using judicial channels to address political harassment rather than treating it as routine campaigning or protest.
